French articles: le, la, les, un, une, des
English has articles, but not the same ones, and it has nothing like the French partitive. French makes you choose before you even name the thing. Three decisions cover most of what you need.
Passé composé or imparfait: which past tense to use
English moves fairly freely between « I did » and « I was doing ». French makes the same distinction, but grammatically rather than optionally, and the choice is rarely free.
French pronunciation: silent letters, liaison and nasal vowels
French is not read the way it is written, and that is good news: the rules are few and very regular. Three of them explain most of the gap.
